The Department enjoys a range of sophisticated facilities and equipment for teaching and research purposes. The Department has two computer laboratories equipped with around 70 quad-core personal computers for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
To deal with computations that require a large amount of memory space for extremely large computational problems in the research area of high performance scientific computation, a Linux parallel cluster laboratory equipped with around 200 multi-core SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) high speed workstations and servers has been set up. By running the MPI (Message Passing Interface), the aggregate power of these powerful computers can be used to solve computational problems which require long computing steps. This computing environment is able to deal with many users logging in at the same time, and provide enough computational power so that up to 50 users can expect reasonable turnaround for their computationally intensive jobs.
