The Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Economics
provides students with solid training in fundamental theories
in both mathematics and economics. The curriculum equips students
with quantitative reasoning skills, conceptual understanding
and the ability to effectively communicate in mathematics and
in the language of economics and social sciences. Students graduated
from this program will be provided with the necessary background
for entry, without remedial course work, into postgraduate programs
in economics. With carefully planned mathematics electives,
it also provides adequate preparation for postgraduate work
in mathematics.
The complexity and technical aspects of economic problems
over the last few decades have stimulated an increased synergy
between mathematics and economics. This interaction has contributed
to formulate these problems through models and specialized
mathematical tools. In Hong Kong, there are ample opportunities
in the financial sector for university graduates that fully
understand the use of mathematical and economic tools and
those who are able to use the knowledge and language of both
disciplines.
This degree program is jointly offered by the Department
of Mathematics and Department of Economics, and it relies
on integrated collaboration from all four schools in HKUST.
The curriculum requires 8 courses in mathematics, 8 courses
in economics and several courses in computer science, humanities
and social science, general education and language. The mathematics
and economics courses are taught by mathematics and economics
professors from the respective department. The program is
advantageous to students who otherwise would take a single
major in mathematics or economics. We aim to provide sequences
of mathematics and economics courses that equip students with
a strong quantitative background in economics. This joint
Mathematics and Economics degree provides a program of study
for talented students who seek the option of taking a quantitatively
oriented job in financial industry or who intend to pursue
postgraduate study in applied mathematics, economics, business
or a related area such as operations research or management
science.
