Undergraduate Minor Program in Mathematics



Enrollment Requirement

Except for those studying the BSc program in Mathematics, or the Physics and Mathematics Option of the BSc program in Physics, any undergraduate student with a CGA of 4.50 (C) or above may enroll in the Mathematics Minor Program. They must declare their intention to enroll in the minor program no earlier than the first semester of their second year but no later than the last day of the add/drop period in the first semester of their final year of study. Students who wish to withdraw from the minor program should apply before the last day of the add/drop period in the first semester of their final year of study.

Curriculum Requirements

The Mathematics Minor Program, except for those studying the BSc Program in Quantitative Finance, requires a minimum total of eighteen credits taken from mathematics courses at the 100-level or above. (MATH 002 and MATH 007 taken prior to 1999-2000 can be counted toward the requirement.) Out of these eighteen credits, at least eight credits must be at the 200-level or above. Out of these eight credits at the 200-level or above, at least four credits must be at the 300-level or above.

For students from the BSc Program in Quantitative Finance, a minimum total of twenty credits of mathematics course at the 100-level or above are required. Out of these twenty credits, at least twelve credits must be at the 200-level or above, and out of these twelve credits, at least eight must be at the 300-level or above (FINA 362 and FINA 363 can be counted toward the 300-level course requirement).

Graduation with a Minor in Mathematics

To graduate with a minor in Mathematics, the students must be enrolled in the minor program and completed all of its requirements, as well as all the requirements of their major program of study; and have attained an average of at least 3.50 (C-) in courses taken within the minor program.

Application Procedures

They must declare their intention to enroll in the minor program no earlier than the first semester of their second year but no later than the last day of the add/drop period in the first semester of their final year# of study.

Interested students should fill out the "Declaration of Undergraduate Minor Program Form" (RR-37) obtainable form the Department or ARR Office. Students will be notified of the application results in writing by ARR Office.

# The "final year of study" means the final year of study within the normal duration of study. The extended semester(s) is not regarded as within the normal duration.

* Final-year students who intend to declare minor program should do it no later than this enrollment period. The above schedule also applies to withdrawal from the minor program.


Credit Transfer Arrangement

For credit transfer, students can transfer a maximum total of 6 credits to the minor program. Courses accepted for credit transfer must normally be at a level equivalent to 100-level or above at HKUST.

Applications must be submitted to the Minor Department no later than one month after student's enrollment in the Minor Program; or following student's return to study from exchange at HKUST. Late applications will not be considered.

Students should fill out the "Application for Credit Transfer Form" (GR-14) obtainable form the Department of Mathematics. Students will be notified by ARR Office of the result of application in writing together with a copy of the revised curriculum

Only credits and not grades will be transferred to HKUST and transfer credits will not be included in the calculation of grade averages.
