MATH 511: Advanced Algebra I

Course Description:

This course is the first part of a one-year course on graduate algebra.  It covers some basic topics for young people who want to be mathematicians and in particular prepare them for the Ph. D. qualifying examinations.  It is based on Chapters 5-9 of the textbook. The course also covers some special topics and applications in the main steam of mathematics.

Grading:

The grades of the course are based on the following numerical grades: (i) Homework (30%); (ii) Midterm examination (30%); (iii) Final examination (40%).
